Health Tip of the Month
Preventing and Treating Flu
Research from Natural Medicine doctors is linking flu to a Vitamin D deficiency as outbreaks are only during the time of year when the sun is the farthest away and people are more likely to be lacking in the best source of Vitamin D—the sun. These same doctors present research indicating that the flu vaccine doesn’t work and is likely to cause many problems instead. (see Dr. Joseph Mercola’s web for several articles www.mercola.com)
85% of Americans are estimated to be very deficient in Vitamin D. More doctors are now testing for Vitamin D levels. It is impossible to overdose on Vitamin D from the sun, but supplements need to be monitored to prevent overdose. Your doctor can do this lab work for you. The proper form of Vitamin D supplement is D3 (not D2). Natural Medicine doctors recommend 2000-5000/day to prevent flu. For those who do come down with flu, the recommendations are to take 2000 IU per kilogram of body weight for 3 days. For a 150 lb person that would be 136,000 IU’s—quite a huge dose—and only for 3 days to knock out the flu. (Take Control Monthly Newsletter, Dr. Mercola Dec. 2008).
During spring and summer when the sun is higher in the sky, we can get sufficient Vitamin D with 30-60 min of sunshine for lighter skinned people and double that for dark skinned people. Proper sun exposure requires that 80% of the body be exposed and only until the skin is the lighest pink. Never burn. Be sure NOT to use any kind of sunscreen, as that blocks the vitamin D. Health benefits from the right amount of sunshine are huge.
Our immune systems are bombarded daily with viruses. If the system is strong enough, our bodies fight off the virus or we have only very mild symptoms. In addition to Vitamin D, the biggest contributors to a good immune system are proper nutrition, regular exercise and other methods of stress reduction, and lots of good sleep. These can even overcome genetic predispositions.

Treatment of the Month
Biocleanse
Suffering from sore muscles from all your workouts this New Year?
Try a Biocleanse to clear out the lactic acid and take away the soreness. It’s also a great healing mechanism for those who have undergone surgery or are injured. BioCleanse is a highly ionized foot bath that removes toxins from the body contributing to poor physical and emotional health. It helps the body clear out heavy metals (lead and mercury, for example) and other toxins and pollutants from food and the environment. Sit with your feet in warm bath water while the machine does the work. Generally a series of 10 treatments provides the best benefit for your body. These can be done 1-2 times a week.
Monthly special $30 for first treatment (usually $50 for a half hour foot bath) or 10 treatments paid in advance for $400.**
