2008 REMEMBRANCE WALK/RUN/RALLY
We started with yellow ribbons – lots
of hand tied yellow ribbons. Enough
to cover a 5 K course – that is, 3.1 miles. And, while tying
those ribbons around tree trunks and sign posts, we put fliers
in
door jams to let everyone along the route know that a herd of patriots would
be running by their houses early on Saturday, September 13th. The
Remembrance Run/Walk and Rally was combined with an existing Remembrance
Rally that has been held annually in Arvada around the anniversary of 9/11. Local
non-profit Homefront Heroes, holds the Remembrance Rally to commemorate the
victims of the the tragedy of 9/11, and to tangibly do something for the
troops serving in harms way.
The
run/walk component will surely become a permanent fixture of the annual event,
because runners and walkers from Quadna (our title sponsor), family members
of deployed troops, and members of the community took to the streets with
enthusiasm. The
neighbors came out to cheer them on.
They finished at Pioneer Pavilion
in Arvada, where they wrote personalized cards to the troops in collaboration
with Memory, Magic & More – a
unique privately owned scrapbooking store in Denver. The cards accompanied
care
packages
to deployed troops sent by Homefront Heroes. Runners
and walkers listened to (and sung along with) the Martin Gilmore Trio, a
bluegrass group, and ate some healthy post-race fare. With the incredible
support of The AIR Foundation, the Remembrance Run/Walk and Rally will be
an annual event and we look forward to seeing you there next year!
