Austin Higgins
June 9, 1984 - September 9, 2001
The Higgins family had been dealing with their son Austin about
coming home late, "partying" and the typical teenage cycle. But one day, before they
got into it again, Austin asked his dad Terry to find him some help with his heroin
addiction. Terry called about 20 treatment centers, but because there was no crime
involved, placement was almost impossible.
When Terry called Harl Hargett, Executive Director at Lost and Found Inc., he expected
a similar response and began to worry that, unlike his business life, this was one
problem he couldn't fix. It was a shocking surprise when Dr. Hargett returned the
call to simply say, "I'll help your son."
A few weeks after being discharged, Austin was doing well in recovery. But early
one morning, Terry went to wake Austin for church to discover he had overdosed
sometime during the night. Terry said, "I don't know what his intentions were that
night, but I do know he didn't intend to die." He was only 17.
In honor of those who bravely fought but lost the battle against addictions, we
created the Austin Higgins Memorial Scholarship, which facilitates the treatment of
children and families with chemical dependency issues, regardless of their
ability to pay.
